Did Clinton backer maneuver Obama albatross Wright to the National Press Club?

April 29, 2008 · 1 Comment

New York Daily News political columnist Errol Louis speculates today about the relationship of Barbara Reynolds, a Clinton supporter, and Jeremiah Wright the one-time ’spiritual advisor’, now rotting albatross, to presidential hopeful Barack Obama.  Reynolds introduced Wright at the Press Club function on Monday.

A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity. (She is an ordained minister).

It also turns out that Reynolds – introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club “who organized” the event – is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter.

On a blog linked to her Web site- www.reynoldsnews.com- Reynolds said in a February post: “My vote for Hillary in the Maryland primary was my way of saying thank you” to Clinton and her husband for the successes of Bill Clinton’s presidency.

The same post criticized Obama’s “Audacity of Hope” theme: “Hope by definition is not based on facts,” wrote Reynolds. It is an emotional expectation. Things hoped for may or may not come. But help based on experience trumps hope every time.”

In another blog entry, Reynolds gives an ever-sharper critique of Obama: “It is a sad testimony that to protect his credentials as a unifier above the fray, the senator is fueling the media characterization that Rev. Dr. Wright is some retiring old uncle in the church basement.”

I don’t know if Reynolds’ eagerness to help Wright stage a disastrous news conference with the national media was a way of trying to help Clinton – my queries to Reynolds by phone and e-mail weren’t returned yesterday – but it’s safe to say she didn’t see any conflict between promoting Wright and supporting Clinton.

Clinton, Obama, McCain, Huckabee

February 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman has an op-ed piece of interest to the Democratic Obama – Clinton race today in the NYT.  Obama ruled in caucuses yesterday and now the (fallible) polls and pundits place him ahead of Clinton in tomorrow’s so-called Potomac Primaries in DC, Maryland and Virginia.  Clinton is raising less money, and has now switched her campaign leadership.  Meanwhile Mike Huckabee, still contesting against McCain, visited Jerry Falwell’s church in Lynchburg, yesterday.  I dare hope this will force McCain to drift further to the right, hurting his chances later in the general election.  What would be revolutionary would be for him instead to visit Lynchburg now and give straight talk to the same people about how bad their intolerance is for the country, how un-Christian they are.  Which path will he chooose?

Chronicle says Obama snubbed Newsom over Gay Marriage

February 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

CW Nevius in today’s Chronicle reports on comments from both Newsom and former Mayor Willie Brown, that Barack Obama refused to be photographed with Mayor Newsom back at a fundraiser in San Francisco in 2004 at the Waterfront restaurant.  He was deemed too controversial for his support of gay marriage.  Obama was in his US Senate race in Illinois at the time.   Politically savvy Brown notes that John Kerry was careful to his Bay Area rallies in Oakland at the time as well, because Newsom was a national poster-child cum punching bag for the issue.
