Show and Tell

We went to the second edition of the new drag talk show “Show and Tell” last night at Kimo’s. The show is hosted by BeBe Sweetbriar and Sister Roma, the second Tuesday of every month.  It is also being webcast on a two week delay.  Each show is a benefit for a different charity.

This month’s guests were David Hawkins, doing stand-up comedy, DJ Adrian Taylor, singer-songwriter Philly, and Derrick Hansen representing the charity St. James Infirmary. I didn’t realize it but St. James Infirmary is named after the Margo St. James who founded COYOTE – the union for sex workers.

David Hawkins by the way will be doing a routine at the Purple Onion soon, part of the Five Funny Fags comedy night. Which reminds me – Marga Gomez (stand-up comic now doing a show at the Marsh called “Long Island Iced Latina”. Don’t miss either show!

I will follow with more, but Rick, our friend Raven and I were at Kimo’s on Polk Street last night for the premiere of “Show and Tell” hosted by Sister Roma and BeBe Sweetbriar.  It’s going to be a monthly benefit; last night the recipient was Tenderloin Tessie.  Self-described as a drag “The View” meets Trannyshack and the Today Show, it is a talk show format with local entertainers, community leaders and more.

Last night we were treated to performances followed by interviews with some of the cast of the local drag Golden Girls – being Heklina, Cookie Dough and Pollo del Mar – as well as comic Ali Mafi, Aaron Baldwin from the board of Tenderloin Tessie, and Ben Leon and Scott Tanner from Raging Stallion.

The venue is Kimo’s, a venerable gay-owned club on Polk in the former Polk Gulch and now being co-opted into more upscale surroundings.  The upstairs “Penthouse” has a stage where local bands play live music and which now provides a monthly stage for Roma and BeBe to develop their show.
