FEC repubs want to fund Sen. Vitter’s call-girl habit

According to a report in today’s New York Times, the three republican members of the Federal Election Commission voted yesterday to allow Sen. Vitter (R-LA), and a frequent flier with the crew of the “D.C. Madame” of a few minutes fame several years ago, to spend $160,000 of campaign donations on his legal bills resulting from his use of the prostitution service.

The three Republicans backed Senator Vitter’s argument that Ms. Palfrey sought to exploit his status as a “member of Congress” and that his legal defense was therefore a political expense.

The Democrats concluded that the $160,000 was the price of being a sinner, not a senator. “To put it plainly, these expenses are the result of some pretty unofficial activities,” Ellen Weintraub, a Democratic commissioner, noted dryly.
