Update – Gay marriage is approved in Argentina

The Argentine Senate voted in favor of gay marriage today by a margin of 33-27, approving a measure already passed the lower house. The President Kristina de Fernandez Kirchner has said she will sign the bill into law.

Uruguay has approved gay civil unions nationwide and other cities in Latin America has done it as well – Buenos Aires and Mexico City among them. Argentina is the first nation in Latin America to allow gays the same marriage rights as heterosexuals.
